Photograph and text by Ken Arni
From the September 2022 issue

It’s always fun to visit the Point of Cedar Island in the Little Assawoman Bay to watch all the juvenile birds that hatch there. I visit the island by kayak, and try to stay at a distance so I don’t disturb the juvenile and the adult birds. This pair of great black-backed gulls were up and about, getting used to life on the island with mom, who was hanging around with them. It was fun watching them getting to know each other.
