X Means 'No Closer'

I love kayaking around the rookery island in the Little Assawoman Bay in springtime. The birds, including these two blue herons, are so interesting to watch as they prepare their nests.

I was sitting in my kayak, nudged up to the shore away from this pair’s nest, when the male heron flew in to join his mate. The female seemed to be so happy that he came back. That also made me happy to watch them.

While they sat together, their necks were swaying back and forth. The picture made me think the “X” was meant to tell me to “come no closer, please.”
