Old-School Fun

As a longtime photojournalist, I’m always in search of the next cool image. Well, Max Voeltner, 16, of Ellicott City, Md., didn’t disappoint on this perfect summer day in Rehoboth Beach. It was refreshing to see a kid not staring at a cellphone and instead having some old-school fun in the sun, with just a board, a good wave, and a well-executed back flip. I was able to get only a few frames before Max took a much-needed rest. This image was shot with a 300 mm lens on a Nikon D4s at 1/8,000 of a second.
